There is a very incorrect misconception even amongst Muslims that Allah SWT only has 99 Names, and this is inaccurate.  Allah SWT is eternal & infinite, therefore He possesses an infinite number of names that they are beyond any one language and are beyond our limited human comprehension to perceive them all.

However, where does the number 99 came from? It originates from this famous hadith that our Prophet SAW mentioned that is reported in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim:  “To Allah belongs ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever believes in their meanings and acts accordingly, will enter Paradise;” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6410)

Our Prophet SAW did not detail to us what are those exact 99 names, so nobody actually knows the exact list of the 99 names. This list of names are, in the end, only a tentative educated attempt by our scholars, which were strictly extracted only from the Quran and Sunnah, and not the final definitive list that is undisputable.  In the end, these Beautiful Names of Allah SWT is meant as a gift for the believers, in order for us to understand and to get to know Allah SWT and His glorious attributes more affectionately and intimately. Knowing these names also serves as a powerful means to invoke our Lord when we are making du’a.
